Mumbai:
Singer-composer Palash Sen has taken a dig at the news of famous singer Arijit Singh walking away from film playback, saying that he understands this decision very well, as he himself has gone through a similar phase at the beginning of his career.
Reflecting on his own journey, Palash said he “knows why” Arijit decided to move on, adding that he had faced comparable experiences in the film industry years earlier and ultimately decided to forge his own path beyond films.
Palash shared several pictures on Instagram from his 2002 film “Filhaal”, which was Meghna Gulzar’s debut film. The film also stars Sanjay Suri, Tabu and Sushmita Sen.
He wrote: “24 years ago today or maybe 2nd February, my first film as an actor, Filhaal, was released.. It was a flop.. Most of the critics gave me a thumbs up and most of the film people trolled me.. There was a particular model/actress who gave me a lecture on why I should not act in films, as did many others too.”
maeri The hitmaker said he “wasn’t interested in films initially.”
“I did it because I wanted to sing a song written by the greatest poet-writer of all time, Gulzar Sahab. For this song to be written by the great Anu ji, it was like my second dream come true. And that was it. I don’t really know why I was considered as a threat.”
He said he was just there to have fun and do his job “to the best of my ability.”
“I got to work with the amazing Sush, Tabu and Sanjay, that was my reward. To finally be directed by the amazing Meghna is the memorable experience of my life. I have nothing but beautiful memories and I am very proud of this film that was ahead of its time. In fact, now that it is so successful on TV, it makes me very happy and grateful,” he said.
He then talked about Arijit Singh and his decision to stop playback singing.
“The truth is that I know why my brother Arijit is leaving the film playback. I was there long ago and I chose my own path.. I know the path Arijit will walk now.”
Palash further added, “Fun fact: That year I was nominated for all the Best Newcomer awards.. including Filmfare.. Of course I didn’t win anything. Even Euphoria never won anything. But you know, the people of this country loved me so much.. Far above any award and that model? Hahahaha (sic).”
It was on January 27, when Arijit announced that he would no longer do any new work as a playback singer.
He wrote, “Hello, Happy New Year everyone. I would like to thank you all for loving me so much as a listener for so many years. I am happy to announce that I will not be taking up any new assignments as a playback singer from now on. I am ending it. It was a wonderful journey.”
The singer thanked his listeners for their unwavering love and support over the years and described his journey as a playback singer as “amazing”.
