‘The Empress’ Season 3 Confirmed to Launch on Netflix in “Late” 2026

Season 3 of Netflix’s German-language period drama was confirmed today for “late 2026,” meaning it’ll drop at least 19 months after it was announced — with a Q4 launch date now almost certain. The third season will be the last season of the show.

Maharani Devrim Lingnau plays Duchess Elisabeth “Sissi” von Wittelsbach of Bavaria, who became Empress of Austria in the 19th century. The young adult series chronicles her love story with Emperor Franz Joseph I (Philippe Froissant) and the political and personal troubles she faces in her life.

The Netflix synopsis for Season 3 is as follows: “After the disastrous Sardinian War, Emperor Franz returns as a traumatized man burdened by the guilt of losing thousands of young men on the battlefield. Elisabeth attempts to help him, fighting passionately for their marriage while simultaneously supporting what she believes is right for the empire – but to no avail. Resistance at court and her own failing health drive her to Vienna. Forced to leave and go on an unexpected adventure, Elisabeth will meet a fateful acquaintance that will change her life and the future of Europe forever.

Lingnau and Froissant starred alongside Melika Foroutan, Johannes Nussbaum, Josephine Thiessen, Runa Greiner, Dejan Bussin, Marlene Burrows, Christophe Favre and Alexander Finkenwirth.

Katharina Eysen remains showrunner, and is executive producer alongside Jochen Laub, Fabian Maubach, Robert Eysen, Katharina Eysen and Scarlett Lacey. Lars Gamehling is co-executive producer and Eisen is the head writer, with Elena von Socken also writing. The directors are Florian Kosen and Julia Langhoff, with Katharina Bühler and Rick Zang as DOPs. Gabriela Reumer is the costume designer and Jens Bartram is leading hair and makeup. Theresia Anna Ficus is the set designer and Michal Pokorny is the associate producer.

Somerhaus creates The Serene Show, one of Netflix’s biggest European series, with MIA Film providing production services.

The first two seasons of Maharani There have been more than 65 million streams since Netflix first began publishing views in the What We Watched report in July 2023. According to the streamer, International Emmy-winning Season 1 remained in the global Netflix Top 10 of non-English shows for five consecutive weeks in 2022, while Season 2 made its way into the Netflix Top 10 in 84 countries in 2024.
