Order for investigation into livestreaming of fight between doctors and BJP MLA in Udhampur

Livestreaming of a heated argument between doctors and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA in Jammu’s Udhampur on Wednesday (January 28, 2026) forced the Jammu and Kashmir government to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary warned of action against employees who “ignore elected representatives”.

The incident took place on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) at the Government Medical College, Udhampur, where BJP MLA Pawan Gupta called a meeting of doctors after the death of Sanjay Gupta, a civilian, resident of Sangur, Udhampur, a few days ago. There was a heated exchange between the MLA and the doctors in the meeting, which was livestreamed online.

Many doctors objected to the livestreaming of the official meeting, which drew sharp reactions from online netizens. “This is a new medical college. There may be many shortcomings, but the good things should also be acknowledged by the MLA. Besides, the official meeting should not have been telecast live,” said a doctor on condition of anonymity.

Facing criticism, the government ordered an investigation into the incident. Professor (Dr) Ashutosh Gupta, Principal, Government Medical College, Jammu, has been appointed the investigating officer, and directed to submit a “comprehensive report” within 15 days.

“The investigation will examine the sequence of events and look into the administrative, security and institutional aspects related to the incident that occurred at GMC Udhampur, which resulted in the circulation of the video on social media,” the official order said.

Congress leader Sumeet Mangotra also condemned the alleged “misbehavior by doctors” with the BJP MLA.

“Strict action will be taken if involved in political activities or working for some selected persons. We are never happy when we take action against an employee. When the honorable MLA asks you (employees) to do something, you should understand that you are working under the constitutional framework. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wants work, not flattery,” Mr Chaudhary said.
