Following the defeat in the first format against India at Edgbaston on 14 July, England captain Harry Brooke believed Frank had suffered a short but disastrous spell during his team’s performance, never gaining momentum. Brook says that the fall of 5 wickets in just 20 runs in the middle overs proved to be the biggest turning point of the match. However, he also performed the team’s combination sequence of Florida and the comics.
After the match, Brook said that any team gets a similar fall on the back foot. He admitted that if his team had not lost wickets during that period, the result could have been different.
Brooke said- It was not exactly an ideal performance. We lost 5 wickets within 20 runs and from somewhere we came under pressure. However, Lodge performed brilliantly and did their best to get the ball back.
After England’s innings, Joe Root and Liam Dawson played important roles. Captain Brooke strengthened both stores. He said that if the team is able to reach 260 runs then the participation of Root and Dawson is the biggest contribution in this. The regular cameos in the finale also made the score competitive.

‘We thought 260 runs were left’
Brook believed that by the time the first innings was about to end England were confident that the score could be defended. But the nature of the wicket changed in the second innings.
He said- The pitch had become a little slower than before. India needed only 5-6 runs per over, but achieved the target without much risk. We felt that if the pitch had remained like that, 260 runs in the first innings could have been enough.
320-330 runs spinners change the match
When asked a question on the team combination, Brooke said that he chooses the playing 11 to see the usual pitch of England. He also believed that the role of spinners is more effective if the batsman scores a big score.
Brook said- If we reach 320 or 330 runs then our spinners can take control of the match in the middle overs. But then everything stops after losing 5 wickets in 20 runs.
Decision on the team will be taken after seeing the pitch in the card.
On the question of change in the team before the second format (16 July), Brook rejected any possibility. He clearly said that after the Cardiff account, a sketch of the pitch will be made and the playing eleven will be decided on that basis. He said- We will go to Cardiff, see the pitch and then decide on the team. Hopefully in the next collectorate we will be back with most of the places.
