MANILA, Philippines – Alex Eala defeated world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Berlin Open on Friday morning (Manila time).

Ella earned her first win over the defending Australian Open champion and added Rybakina to her growing list of wins against top-10 players.

The last time the two met, Rybakina defeated Ella on clay at the Italian Open. This time, Ella continued her impressive grass-court performances, which included capturing the WTA 125 Birmingham Open title last week.

Ella, a wild card at the WTA 500 tournament, found a way to neutralize Rybakina’s big-hitting throughout the match with a strong return game.
