The New Zealander started in 17th place and with the energy of those around him moved into the top six by the end of the first round of attack mode activation.
His initial six-minute 50-kilowatt, all-wheel drive attack saw him charge to the front on lap 27 and take control from there, creating a gap of two seconds to those behind.

He held off the lead of two World Champions in Rolland and Wehrlein in the second round of Attack Mode as the race reached its climax to seal the deal and his 16th race win in Formula E – more than any other driver in the history of the series.
Roland finished second after yesterday’s defending champion finished third – a double podium in Berlin. He has more silverware than any other driver so far this season. Wehrlein failed to score yesterday as a puncture ended his chances prematurely, but today at the third attempt he extended his standings lead on home soil.
It was a strong weekend for Porsche and the ‘Pink Pig’ liveried cars, following Nico Mueller’s Round 7 victory, ensuring that the Stuttgart firm will remain ahead of the teams and manufacturers in the standings except on home soil.
We will travel to Monaco in two weeks’ time for Rounds 9 and 10 of the campaign.
As it happened…
Wehrlein and Barnard led the pack through Turn 1 and the pair swapped places halfway around the lap, setting up for a proper tactical encounter with the front-runners.
With the same section of Tempelhof’s concrete apron and 20 cars scraping for track position, contact seemed inevitable and it came at the hairpin, with Buemi squeezing the Mahindra into Cassidy’s Citroën – pushing De Vries out and moving Cassidy down the order.
Lap 7 and Envision duo Ericsson and Buemi led, with Mortara, Vergne, Drugovich, Bernard, Wehrlein, Mueller, da Costa and Guenther completing the top 10. Cassidy then found himself back in touch – clipping Buemi’s Envision, leaving Cassidy to take a pit stop for a replacement Citroën front wing.
On lap 12, Rowland pulled the pin and pushed through – setting the fastest lap of the race and giving up three or four percentage points of usable energy to the rest of the pack. The Briton moved up from the back of the pack to sixth and looked to be pushing hard towards the front.
Maloney was the first to jump on two mandatory 50kW, all-wheel drive Attack Mode boosts – propelling the Lola Yamaha ABT driver into the top six. Vergne followed up a lap later with early activation – also moving himself into the top six on lap 17.
Rolland made it to the front of the field and began to manage a gap to Buemi in P2 – the Nissan was a good three percent on energy remaining.
NATO then took ATTACK to slice into P1 on lap 21, with the same energy advantage as Rowland over the pack – and used this to gain a two-second lead. Both he and Roland were in 15th place from the start.
Rowland then responded with an attack on lap 22, giving the Nissan driver the final edge of the top 10 as the pace of the pack began to pick up – almost six seconds a lap faster than the first third of the race.
By the end of its active season Roland had moved up to second place behind NATO, with only Mitch Evans in Jaguar looking to be in a better position on energy remaining – the Kiwi was third behind NATO and Roland. On lap 27 after one lap, Evans attacked from the front with energy in hand. It looked like he had timed things perfectly with an early attack mode boost of six minutes to take P1.
With six laps remaining, Evans began to try to close a gap of 1.6 seconds to Rowland. Vergne finished third, with Nato, Wehrlein, Buemi, da Costa, Mueller, Barnard and Ticktum completing the top 10.
Evans blinked last in the second attack mode activation and now had a two-second lead in first place. Lap 32 and Evans made the jump – Wehrlein was now in front but with a minute less attack mode to play. However, Rowland had another 50 kW in fourth place, with Evans also having an all-wheel drive boost, as well as a percentage of the energy in hand.
Mitch made the move to lead off the final turn on lap 32, and it looked as if Rowland would be followed by Wehrlein’s Porsche – and he started/finished a lap later, although seemingly under yellow flag conditions.
After a full course yellow to recover the debris that threw that yellow flag, two racing laps were skipped with drivers pinned. Evans was able to quickly catch up and hold off Rowland, with Wehrlein sealing another home podium for Porsche on home soil.
