In an exclusive conversation with WION, he opens up about working with Kapil Sharma, managing time between acting and business and much more.
WION: What was your first reaction after reading the script of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2?
Parul Gulati: There was a lot of laughter. My first reaction was of course, wow, Abbas-Mustan’s film, Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon 2, and it is a great comedy. I immediately imagined myself on a poster and I thought, let’s do this.
WION: Can you tell me something about your character?
Parul Gulati: I am playing the character of a Christian wife. As the movie is already released, everyone knows that Kapil sir’s character name is Mohan and he gets married in different religions like Mehmood, Michael and finally, he also falls in love with a Punjabi girl. I am a Christian wife. He really loves a woman, but accidentally marries all three of us. It’s basically just comedy, so you don’t really use your brain for it. I am a doctor in the film, but this is Kapil Sharma’s film and we are wives.
WION: How was your experience working with Kapil Sharma? Is he as funny on set as he is on his show?
Parul Gulati: It was a lot of fun. He is just like a child; That part is similar to what you see on the screen. Also, he remains a bit reserved and does not talk much. He prefers to be with people he already knows. I didn’t know him, so I was always wondering how much I could talk and how much I couldn’t.
He is a big personality; Everyone knows Kapil Sharma. When he is in a shot, he is always thinking about how to do the scene. “We can do it this way. Then I’ll say this line like this.” This is great energy to work with.
WION: What was the inspiration behind your brand, Nish Hair?
Parul Gulati: The idea was to create products that were easily available. I wanted to buy hair extensions because I had grown my hair quite short, and as a heroine, you’re supposed to always have long hair, at least nine years from now. At the time, I needed extensions for myself, and I couldn’t find them online. I thought, how is it possible that in such a big country we don’t have an online hair extension brand? I decided, “I’ll make one.”
While working on it I realized that hair fall is a huge issue and no one talks about it. Women are very shy about it and everyone thinks that hair extensions or toppers are just wigs. That taboo has made it so enjoyable for me to educate people about what hair extensions really are. I got swept up in the whole thing and kept creating products based on what people wanted.
WION: Since you are a businesswoman and also an actress, what are the challenges you face in managing both?
Parul Gulati: You learn to balance it. I don’t really see it as a challenge. Sometimes I feel that there is less time in the day; I wish there was a little more time or I hadn’t spent an extra hour doing some stupid thing. I am also a girl; I get distracted and start doing something without thinking. I think that’s the only challenge. Besides, when you really want to do something, it is possible. I do; It’s just that sometimes it takes me time because I get off topic.
WION: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since entering the business?
Parul Gulati: I’ve learned that there are different types of people in the world, and I’ve learned a lot about human behavior while doing business. It’s opened my mind up to so many different things that I wouldn’t have experienced as an actor, from selling a product to creating it and delivering it to the world.
The biggest lesson is that it doesn’t matter if your product isn’t good. If what you are providing is not good, nothing else matters as a business woman. It has also made me very sharp in numbers, trading and investing. I feel like a much better person now.
