Best manager and best team – can Crystal Palace maintain a special season?

Glasner joined Palace in February 2024 after successful stints at Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 51-year-old has since helped Palace achieve consecutive record points total in the Premier League and last season’s FA Cup win over Manchester City gave them their first major trophy.

This marked their first appearance in a major European competition – although it was downgraded from the Europa League to the Europa Conference League due to multi-club ownership rules – while they also beat league winners Liverpool to win the Community Shield.

Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports: “We are looking at the best manager and best team in the history of Crystal Palace.

“Those supporters could never have dreamed of what would happen to their football club when that man came in.”

Selhurst Park has become one of the toughest places for teams to play, as Palace are unbeaten in the league this season until defeat to United last weekend.

On the road, his looks are arguably even better.

Since Glasner’s first game in charge in March 2024, only Arsenal (65), Liverpool (57) and Manchester City (55) have won more Premier League points away from home than Crystal Palace (52).

But the defeat to United prompted Glassner to criticize the club as he suggested that the club-record £60m received from the sale of Eberechi Eze this summer had not been reinvested in the team.

His team has lost all four league matches played after a midweek European match this season, suggesting that squad depth and meeting the demands of an increased schedule has been a problem.

And Glasner was quick to point out that the club had “missed” the chance to play an even better season by not spending the summer.

Carragher said, “When he gets a result he doesn’t like, he doesn’t hesitate to be vocal about it to the board or the sporting director.”

“He probably has to take it seriously because he is the greatest manager in their history.”
