Ashes: Ollie Pope asks England teammates to wear helmets while on scooter

This is the latest episode in a series of local media coverage of the England team on their tour to Australia.

The players were filmed upon arriving at Perth Airport, with particular focus on Stokes and batsman Joe Root.

Visitors were followed by drones while playing golf and some players were photographed visiting an aquarium in Perth.

After the heavy defeat in the first Test, his performance and attitude came under heavy scrutiny. Former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson said that the England team is ‘arrogant’.

England trail the series 1-0 and are planning holidays to Noosa, north of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast, after the second Test, regardless of the result.

Pope said England are “very conscious” of media attention but they should be able to spend time away from cricket.

“It’s important for us as cricketers and people to try to switch off and be ourselves,” the Surrey batsman said.

Pope, 27, is on his second Ashes tour and highlighted the difference from his previous trip to Australia four years ago, when the England team was under strict Covid restrictions.

“It is unhealthy to close your doors and not leave your room, as we saw in the time of COVID,” the Pope said.

“Whatever you’re doing in your spare time, even if it’s just taking your mind off cricket for a day or two, it’s really important.

“If they want to catch us doing that, that’s fine. It’s important to maintain balance on a long tour like this.”

Australian fast bowler Scott Boland agreed with Pope on the need for players to stay away from cricket.

Being the team hosting the series, Australia’s players will get the advantage of returning home between Tests.

“You want to enjoy your free time,” Boland said. “We can go home, see our families and things like that.

“You like your privacy – I do too. I’m a very private person. I like to go home whenever possible and not have a camera in my face all the time.”

England have confirmed their squad for the second Test, with all-rounder Will Jacques replacing the injured Wood.

Australia opener Usman Khawaja has been ruled out with a back injury, meaning Travis Head, who scored a match-winning century in the opening Test, will continue at the top of the order with Josh Inglis or Beau Webster coming into the side.
